About me
My name is Toril Rokseth. I am 46 years old and have a background as a teacher. I found social studies and religious studies particularly fascinating, which led me to pursue further studies in religious history and development studies, including fieldwork in Kerala, India. Later, I also studied management. After seven years in the classroom, I was employed at the Nobel Peace Center in 2008. My role there was to lead initiatives aimed at inspiring visitors to reflect on their roles as citizens through peace education. As the head of the education department, I developed the school program, produced exhibitions, and created teaching concepts for children, students, and adults. After a few years, I transitioned to the position of director of program and exhibitions, where I was responsible for all of the museum?public program.
Since 2022, I have been employed as head of department at the Museum of Cultural History. In my role as the head of the museum's exhibition and audience section, my main tasks involve ensuring effective knowledge dissemination and fostering connections between UiO and the community. I work closely with museum management and leaders from the academic sections, which has given me solid insight into UiO's operational model, academic missions, revenue generation requirements, and the university's various social responsibilities.
Why do I want to join the board of the University of Oslo?
With three years of leadership experience at the museum, I know the organization well from the inside. Combined with twelve years of leadership experience in an external organization, I can assess UiO's role in society from both internal and external perspectives.
I wish to contribute to the Board with my expertise during this challenging time for UiO. The university faces financial challenges, increased competition to attract new students, and an international climate where academia itself is under pressure.
As the person responsible for the museum's public program, I work daily to highlight the university's relevant activities in a visible, attractive, and accessible manner to the public. This experience has provided me with a good understanding of public perceptions of the university and effective methods for presenting knowledge to the world—methods that UiO could benefit from.
My key issues
As a board member, I will focus on strengthening UiO's connections with the public and the society. I intend to use my experience to work purposefully to ensure optimal contact and dialogue between the university and the external world. Successful collaboration in this area is crucial for student recruitment and for fostering dialogue and cooperation with stakeholders both nationally and internationally.
The new Viking Age Museum will become an interdisciplinary flagship for the university when it opens in 2027. With a million visitors annually, it will serve as a meeting point both nationally and internationally. I will focus on how UiO can best leverage this opportunity for the entire university.
I am also committed to highlighting and showcasing the professional competence of the technical and administrative staff.
