Objectives
After completing this course, participants should know more about:
- Basic Norwegian language
- Key elements of Norwegian culture
- Some main tourist sites in Oslo
- Typical Norwegian lifestyle and usual ways to socialize
- How to solve practical issues as a newcomer to Norway
Content
- Basic knowledge and practice of Norwegian language, like how to introduce oneself and useful vocabulary for getting around in Oslo.
- The welfare state, the oil fund, and social structures in Norway.
- Get an overview of general services, like banking, health services, and bureaucracy.
- Norwegian work-life expectations.
- Norway’s history and cultural developments.
- Get tips about how to mix and meet with local people.?
Target group
- International researchers at UiO and accompanying spouses/partners who are new to Norway
- International researchers at other research institutions
- Embassy staff who are new to Norway
- Newly arrived international staff to workplaces in Oslo
- Other newcomers who will benefit from a basic introduction to Norwegian language, culture and lifestyle
Admission requirements and preliminary knowledge
No previous knowledge of Norwegian language is required. Participants must be able to speak English.?It is not possible to get a student visa to attend Norwegian language courses. If you need a visa to attend the course, you cannot apply.
Duration
- 3 class hours daily:?09:15-12:15
- In total 45 class hours (teaching and excursions)
- In-person daily attendance is expected

In-person sessions:
Monday-Friday during the 3-week course.
Participants are expected to attend all the course sessions. If you will be absent, please contact the instructor ahead of time.
Location
The teaching will take place at Kjels?s in Oslo, and the excursion locations.
Course fee including accommodation
- $ 3,250 (Ca NOK 34.125)
Accommodation is at Oslo Hostel R?nningen. Meals (including packed lunch) are provided.
Course material
Participants are not required to buy any books for this course. All reading materials will be provided.
