Travel insurance
- Trips paid for by credit card
- If you have paid the trip with a credit card, you may be covered by an automatic insurance for a specific number of days. This depends on the type of card you used and the issuer of the card, and you should always check the details of this coverage before departure.
- If you have paid the trip with your UiO credit card, you have travel insurance for trips lasting up to 90 days. Read more about the terms of the insurance (eurocard.no) (Norwegian).
- Travel insurance for business travel
- 'Business travel' is travel of non-permanent nature that a supervisor has required or allowed you to undertake and for which expenses are covered by the unit/University's ordinary funds.
- Governmental employers are by law self-insurers and therefore not entitled to sign travel or accident insurance agreements with insurance companies. However, the employer may sign a travel insurance on behalf of an employee for specific individual travel outside the EEA.
- During international business trips, you are covered according to the Government travel allowance scale for travel abroad, Section 13 (lovdata.no) (Norwegian) and social security regulations, see health-related entitlements during stays abroad (helsenorge.no) (Norwegian):
- In the event of illness and/or injury in an EEA country or Switzerland citizens of EEA countries and Switzerland are entitled to coverage according to the regulations pertaining to the country of their stay. Entitlement should be documented by a European Health Insurance Card (ec.europa.eu). If you don't have one or if your card has expired, you can order the card online (nav.no). It will be sent to you by mail within about a week.
- In the event of illness and/or injury outside the EEA and Switzerland, expenses are covered for necessary treatment and documented expenses for repatriation that are not covered by the National Insurance Scheme or other schemes.
- Damage to or loss of ordinary luggage is covered by up to NOK 30,000.
- There are special provisions for death or disability for state employees on business trips, cf. Special agreement on insurance and compensation schemes for state employees on business trips and when stationed abroad (pdf) (lovdata.no) (Norwegian).

Occupational injury insurance
- You retain your occupational injury coverage in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund as long as you are an UiO employee. Just as when you are in Norway, the terms of the insurance require that the injury or illness arise when you work, at your workplace and during work hours. In other words, the insurance does not cover the entire stay abroad, unless it is a business trip.
- There are special schemes for state employees who become disabled during business trips or while stationed abroad, cf. Special agreement on insurance and compensation schemes for state employees on business trips and when stationed abroad (pdf) (lovdata.no) (Norwegian).
