All permanent employees in academic positions have the right to apply for research and educational leave in line with the guidelines for allocating leave. One year of research and educational leave can be granted after six years of service, or half a year of research and educational leave can be granted after three years of service.
Guidelines for the accrual of research leave at ISS, adopted by the department board on December 10, 2025, effective from January 1, 2026.
- Research and educational leave is not something employees are entitled to receive, but rather something they have the right to apply for. You do not accrue the right to apply for research and education leave when you are fully or partially released from your position or on leave.
- With partial release/leave, you accumulate the right to apply for research and educational leave corresponding to the percentage that remains after deducting the release/leave.
- If there is insufficient accrual of ordinary research leave, it is possible to apply for teaching leave based on surplus hours. This will be particularly relevant to grant in connection with plans for longer stays abroad. Parental leave should not be deducted when calculating the basis for earning research and education leave. Other legally conferred leave does not entail similar rights.
Application for research leave:
- The deadline for applying for research and education leave is August 15, at least one year before the planned leave.
- After you have submitted your application to the department, the department head will evaluate your application against the criteria for research leave. This occurs in dialogue with the head of teaching and relevant program leaders. Incoming applications are normally processed before September 1 of the same year.
