Installation and use

VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) gives you access to a desktop at UiO using the Omnissa Horizon Client. This guide shows you how to install and use the client.

Installing Omnissa Horizon Client on a UiO managed PC

At UiO the Horizon Client can be installed from Windows Software Center.

  1. To access the Software Center press Windows+s and start typing “software center”, then press enter to start the application.
  2. In the upper right corner of the Software Center search for “horizon”
  3. Select to install the “Omnissa Horizon Client”.

You will now have the Omnissa Horizon icon on your desktop.

Installing Omnissa Horizon Client on your private machine

  1. In order to connect to a virtual machine you need the Omnissa Horizon Client software. If you do not already have Omnissa Horizon Client installed you can download it: Omnissa Horizon Client
    If you need a version supported for macOS Monterey (12) you can download it here.
  2. Open the downloaded installation file and follow the instructions to install the software.
  3. Start Omnissa Horizon Client. You will find it in the start menu on your Windows computer, or in the Applications folder on your Mac.
  4. The first time you run Omnissa Horizon Client you need to connect to UiO's server.
    • Click "Add Server"
    • Enter "view.uio.no" into the text field in the pop up window and click "connect"

    • Log in with your UiO-username, password and two-factor authentication.

    • If the software offers you to add shortcuts, you can click "No".
       
  5. You will see different desktops and applications. Both for VDI and standalone software. Double-click on the one you want to open.
