What does your job entail?
Oslo Economics is a consulting company that investigates economic issues and provides advice to a range of stakeholders, such as governments and businesses. The work is varied, and you get to work on many different topics. You contribute in various ways to solve projects and create new project proposals. This can involve data collection, interviews, designing surveys, writing texts, and analyzing collected information. So far, I have participated in both research projects and quality assurance of large public investments for ministries. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to work on projects related to health economics and sports. I am also part of the internal group that manages Oslo Economics's "Database for National Economic Activity."
What's the most exciting part of your job?
It is exciting to be involved in many different projects and learn about new topics. It provides the opportunity to develop across various fields and acquire knowledge in different areas.
How do you apply your education in your job?
The master's program in economics at the Department of Economics offers a great opportunity to become familiar with various fields and determine which topics you enjoy. In my opinion, most of these topics are highly relevant to the job I have. The subjects provide a solid foundation for economic reasoning, which can be applied to various issues. This has been useful in my job. I particularly find the practical subjects that involve coding to be beneficial in the workplace. This has helped me, among other things, in working with the database for national economic activity.
What is a typical day at work like?
No working days are the same. Some days, you work a lot on just one project, while other days you work on several different projects and project proposals for potential clients. The amount of work to be done from day to day also depends on the deadlines of the various projects. You can regulate your workload by signing up for tasks that you find exciting.
How did you get the job?
Oslo Economics announces available positions every August. I applied in September 2023 and progressed to the interview stage. There were two rounds of interviews with pleasant conversations where I got a good impression of the company. Oslo Economics hires many recent graduates, and it is common to be employed when one has about a year left of their studies. Many are also hired after having had an internship here.
What's your best tip for other students who want a job like yours?
Choose the subjects in your studies that you find most interesting, and always give your best! There are opportunities to specialize further in this job if you find specific topics that you are particularly interested in. Having a relevant part-time job alongside your studies can also be beneficial. This gives a potential employer a good impression of you when you apply for a full-time position, and you gain experience in what it is like to have an office job and what one typically has to deal with in similar workplaces. Oslo Economics offers internships both in the winter and summer, with an application deadline in September. An internship provides the chance to get to know the workplace and the typical tasks here and is a great opportunity to showcase yourself as a candidate for later becoming a permanent employee at the company.
