Human and animal lives intersect, whether through direct physical contact or by inhabiting the same space at a different time. Environmental humanities scholars have begun investigating these relationships through the emerging field of multispecies studies, building on decades of work in animal history, feminist studies, and Indigenous epistemologies. Contributors to this volume consider the entangled human-animal relationships of a complex multispecies world, where domesticated animals, wild animals, and people cross paths, creating hybrid naturecultures. Technology, they argue, structures how animals and humans share spaces. From clothing to cars to computers, technology acts as a mediator and connector of lives across time and space. It facilitates ways of looking at, measuring, moving, and killing, as well as controlling, containing, conserving, and cooperating with animals. Sharing Spaces challenges us to analyze how technology shapes human relationships with the nonhuman world, exploring nonhuman animals as kin, companions, food, transgressors, entertainment, and tools.

The first tourists, trekkers and ramblers in Norway found their way and navigated the paths that ran through pastures, forests and mountains. The paths these first visitors walked on, and indeed the paths we still use walking and trekking today, were created by grazing animals and the people who tended to them, walking habitually rather than occasionally. The everyday and seasonal grazing, labour, and transport associated with transhumance created a heritage in its own right, a movement heritage. Arguably, grazing animals were mediators of the land and movement within the land; by following their paths and their sense of place, trekkers could stay safe. Today the situation has changed, trekking rather than transhumance is the prevalent form of movement heritage. By exploring foreign visitor’s topographical accounts, travel literature and yearbooks from the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) from 1820–1960, this article sheds light on the transition of this movement heritage and asks, who led the way in the past, who leads the way in the present, and is there still room for the embodied memory of animals, and their heft in the future?

Public histories of spaces are often at the heart of territorial claims: they can cultivate emotional identification, or even build legitimizing facts on the ground. Digital technologies have increased public awareness of, and ability to mobilize, the power of public histories of spaces. This means more influence for both official and grassroots channels to spread, augment, or contest spatial narratives. We argue that those who take care of spaces and their archival records, and interpret them for the public, have the opportunity to play an important public role. Through diverse examples, this chapter shows how control of iconography, access, and ownership is at stake.

No longer a niche phenomenon, video games are part of mainstream popular culture. During the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, more people than ever turned to video games for entertainment and social interactions.? Confined to their homes by lockdowns and restrictions, many embraced video game worlds as complements to, not replacements for, the world outside their homes. Games are not only a way to pass the time, but also a truly meaningful activity to many.

The article traces the beginnings of the powerful liaison between automobile technology, tourism, and the ‘Land of the Fjords’. Focusing on the German automobile club ADAC in the period 1920s to 1960s, the article examines how German motorists discovered and embraced Norwegian roads, and what idea of the ‘Norway experience’ was constructed along the way. Tourists, it is argued, were primed for car travel through the narratives of contrasting vistas and sublime nature stemming from the time Norway was experienced by cruise and cariole. During the German occupation of Norway 1940–1945, narratives and pictures of Norwegian landscapes were spread among Germans as never before; now combined with narratives of heroism, conquest, and technology. In the 1950s, when West Germany was experiencing the onset of mass tourism and mass motorization, the concept of the extraordinary car trip on Norway’s roads was ready to be widely communicated and put into praxis. Postwar ‘Grand Tours on wheels’ to Scandinavia were both continuing narratives on Northern remoteness and otherness, and ‘silencing’ historical landscapes of war. By the mid-1960s, Norway had been established as a superb car travellers’ destination, a sanctuary of nature just accessible by a car.
