Course content
The main focus of this course will be on works/epochs/schools/ideas in the history of philosophy from the 17th century until the 19th century. Important names here are Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Leibniz, Berkeley and Hume within the filed of metaphysics and epistemology; Hobbes, Grotius, Locke, Hume, Smith og Kant within ethics and political philosophy.
Learning outcome
After having completed the course, the students are expected to:
- have a good knowledge of the core texts for the course
- have a certain knowledge of the debate concerning the topic
- be able to discuss the topic in a rather independent and critical manner
- be able to describe in a consistent and clear manner what are the main aspects of the topic

- 5 credits overlap with FIL2501 – Fordypning - Filosofihistorie (discontinued).
Teaching
14 double sessions with combined seminars and lectures. The teaching takes place together with students in FIL4600.The course has the following compulsory tuition activities:
8 response papers of one page which are to be submitted in?Canvas. The papers must be submitted a minimum 8 out of 13 weeks (no submission the first week).
All compulsory tuition activities must be accepted as satisfactory in order to qualify for the final exam. The activities are only valid for one semester.

Examination
Final 4-hour school exam.
In order to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
