ISSMF4001 – Clinical Placement and Socioeconomic Perspectives in Health

Course content

The course will last for four weeks and contain a combination of teaching and clinical placement. The first week will be teaching sessions about the Scandinavian Healthcare System and the basics of Socioeconomics of Health Care from an international perspective. There will be visits to relevant organizations.?

The last 3 weeks will take place in the clinic at the respective department, with special focus on the development of diagnostic skills and application of the theoretical knowledge gained in patient care.?

The clinical placements will differ from year to year depending on participating departments.?

Learning outcome

The overall objective of the course is to bring an international perspective into medical training. After the clinical placement the students will be asked to contribute with their perspectives to perform a comparative assessment of the differences in healthcare systems.?

A second objective of the course will be to allow students to improve their clinical skills by actively participating in the daily clinical work thus enabling a smoother transition from the medical studies to work as a physician.?

After completing the 4-week course, the student must be able to:?

  • Formulate a comparative analysis of differences in healthcare systems and assess the implications in terms of patient care and socioeconomics.?

  • Be able to reflect on the socioeconomic consequences of different healthcare strategies.?

  • Apply the theoretical knowledge on disease and symptom complexes into patient care with special focus in diagnostics and treatment.?

  • Be able to present a patient case for a multidisciplinary discussion?

  • Be able to navigate in digitalized medical records?

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Bachelor degree or similar in Medicine??

In order to participate in the clinical placement, you must have completed clinical practice with a total duration of at least five weeks in another country than Norway.?

Students must be tested for MRSA upon arrival to Norway and cannot enter the clinical environment without a negative MRSA test.?

Teaching

The course consists of lectures, Monday to Friday, for the first week. Classroom sessions include lectures, student presentations and group work discussions. Visits to institutions in the Oslo area are included.?

Daily attendance is expected of all participants. Students must attend a minimum of 75% of the lectures in order to take the final exam.?

Examination

The course includes a group presentation that will be graded with a pass/fail scale. You can check your results and order an exam transcript in Studentweb three weeks after the group presentations.?

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you must present your work in English.?

The course employs a grading scale with pass/fail values. Read more about?the grading system.

Resit an examination

Candidates who have a re-scheduled or new examination are allowed take the next ordinary examination. If you have successfully passed mandatory assignments, or other compulsory activities required before you are qualified to attend the exam, you do not need to re-sit these.?

Only students with either valid absence (doctors note) or students who failed the exam can re-sit an exam.?
