ISSN1320 – From Ibsen to Fosse: An Introduction to Norwegian Literature

Course content

The course explores select classic and contemporary plays, poems, short stories, and novels by Norwegian authors. Analyze literary texts and reflect on their intersections with gender, place, and history. Texts include folktales, an Ibsen play, novels, and other works of fiction. Through lectures and class discussions, students gain proficiency in close reading and an understanding of the cultural contexts of literary expression.

Learning outcome

To read selections of Norwegian literature and understand the roots, influences, and impact of Norwegian literary culture. To develop some mastery of close reading and literary analysis.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway. Minimum academic requirements.

This course changed name from ISSN1320 "Norwegian Literature" to ISSN1320 "From Ibsen to Fosse: An Introduction to Norwegian Literature" in November 2023.

Teaching

The course consists of daily lectures, Monday to Friday. Classroom sessions include lectures, student presentations and discussions. Students must attend a minimum of 75% of the lectures in order to take the final exam.

Examination

The course includes a final exam.

Digital examination

The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Candidates who have a re-scheduled or new examination are allowed take the next ordinary examination. If you have successfully passed obligatory assignments, or other compulsory activities required before you are qualified to attend the exam, you need not re-sit these.

Only students with either valid absence (doctor's note) or students who failed the exam can re-sit an exam.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
