GEO9200 – Basin Analysis - Principles and Applications

Course content

The course presents theories of basin formation in various types of geotectonic setting, basin infill dynamics, subsidence history and consequences for reservoir and source rock development and the petroleum system. Subjects to be discussed include physical state of lithosphere, mechanisms of sedimentary basin formation by stretching, strike-slip, flexure and compression, effects of mantle dynamics, basin infill mechanisms and depositional systems, basin stratigraphy, subsidence and thermal history, changes of reservoir and petrophysical parameters during burial and tectonic processes, and application to the petroleum system, leading towards the play concept.

Learning outcome

To give a quantitative as well as qualitative fundament for analysing sedimentary basins, particularly from seismic data

Admission to the course

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Master's degree or corresponding type of degree or education

Basic knowledge in geological processes, structural geology, sedimentology and stratigraphy.

Teaching

We reserve the right to cancel teaching in this course in semesters when less than 3 students are admitted.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. Examination

Oral exam after the seminar week, counts 100%.

In this course may any written exam questions or assignment questions be available in English only.

Grading scale

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
