Course content

This course provides an overview of the field of microbiology, with a focus on terrestrial diversity. The course covers prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbiology, with a focus on their metabolism (biochemistry), environmental impact (biogeochemistry), and diagnostics. Microbial genetics and microbial pathogenesis are part of other, more advanced courses.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you

  • have general knowledge of microbiology and and how microbes impact our environment
  • will know about the diversity of microorganisms, their metabolism and ecology
  • will have practical skills such as sterile techniques, enrichment cultures, microscopy, food microbiology (e.g. fermentation), air microbiology and environmental and clinical diagnostics methods.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.
