The exam grades are published several days ago, and this is the end of the IN3020/4020 journey for almost all of you. I hope you enjoyed the course and learned something new and interesting.

The exam paper (without solutions) is published here; note that the exam was the same for IN3020 and IN4020 this year. The exam paper with solutions, including the marking guides and threshold scheme, is here.

Dear IN3020&4020 takers,

I remind you that we have the exam tomorrow. 

I am sure that most, if not all of you are well-prepared; at a minimum, you know much more about how database engines work inside than in January.

I want to repeat a couple of tips about the exam:

1. The exam is hard. But many of you will get As and Bs: in previous years the threshold for A was about 75/100 or even less. So, do not be frustrated if you could not finish all of the problems. This is normal.

2. Time is precious during the exam. So, read all the questions first and then begin solving those that you know how to solve easily, and move to harder ones only after that.

3. Time is precious. So, do not write in Inspera what is not asked (you are also risking to write something wrong, which may decrease your mark for this question). Also, all of the questions can be answered perfectly in few lines; ...

I hope you now know everything about databases and perfectly prepared to the exam!

Remember that you will have access to the all slides of the course as a single file. I prepared this file, it is available here (for now, on the exam it will be inside Inspera).

Please note that page numbers is very useful thing to work with this file. On the first page, you see the table of contents with page numbers for every set of lectures. Then, you will have an opportunity to use ¡®go to page¡¯ functionality in Inspera, so you can enter a page number of the relevant lecture and go straight to the material. Please, try it on your local machine (every reasonable PDF reader has ¡®go to page¡¯).

Hi everyone,

Just want to give you some information on the planned activities for the group session next week.

Today at the group session we had a menti recap going through the content of Part 1, I will link it here. We didn't have time to also go through the questions with * from Part 1, we will do so next group session. 

We will also go through the transaction management questions with * next time since by then you will have access to all the solutions.

Besides this, you will also get some time to work on Sheet 10 and I can assist if you have questions for that.

Hi everyone,

Next week I want to take some time in the group session to do a recap for part 1 of the course (up to and including query evaluation). I will prepare some resources for this, but if you have particular questions you want answered (for example if you didn't understand some of the solutions to the group session exercises, or if you have some questions from the slides) please send them my way by Monday (March 24) by email at roxanap@uio.no. If not, I can also try to take them on the spot on Tuesday. We will of course continue with the transaction management material as well.

First: please make sure that you read the message below about the second mandatory. 

Second: I sent the following email to the group of students registered for Group 1 (Wednesday) sessions. However, I have heard few complaints that not everyone received it. I do not understand why and how this can happen, but I copy this email below:

"Dear group 1 of IN3020/4020,

We nearly cancelled the Wednesday session when Roxana was not available, but now we have an opportunity to reconsider this decision. However, the demand for both groups is still low, and it does not make sense to do these sessions for just one or two students. We will keep Tuesday session anyway, because it is more popular, and you are always welcome to come there. We are now nearly done with the lectures on the first part of the course. The second mandatory, covering its second half, is now published. The deadline for submission in Devilry is 19 March (midnight); this will allow you to cover this material in group sessions and have some time after this to do the exercises themselves. The exercise sheet is available now (see on the left). Note that this mandatory is more difficult, so may need to allow more time to solve it.

The first mandatory exercise sheet is now published and available at here. The deadline for submitting your solution is in 2 weeks, Monday, 24 February at 23:59. We will use Devilry for submissions. It is not yet available for your submissions, but will be such in a couple of days.

Hello IN3020/4020-takers!

Welcome everyone who wants to know how database engines work inside. We will launch on Monday next week, 20 January, at 10:15 in Kristen Nygaards hus (not the main IFI building!), Lille Auditorium.

We will normally have two lectures, Monday and Tuesday, and one group session each week (the first week is an exception: no group sessions). Do not forget to sign up to group sessions!

Your main entry point for the course will be this page, as well as the Schedule sub-page, where we will publish the materials related to each particular lecture/group session (we will also use other communication tools, which I will introduce in the first lecture).
