The Student Council at the Department of Mathematics evaluates various courses given by the Department of Mathematics each year, and this semester MAT2200 is among the chosen. Room 1120 in Abels Hus is reserved on all weekdays from Wednesday June 1st to Wednesday June 8th a study/discussion spot. I hope you can meet up and make use of the space!
Note that Monday June 6th is a holiday so the university is closed and the room could not be reserved on that day.

Today's lecture/review session will be held at the regularly scheduled time from 14.00 - 16.00.
In general, the following guidelines apply in courses at the Department of Mathematics:
- The examination lasts 4 hours. In addition, you will have an extra 30 minutes to scan and upload your PDF.
- All examination aids are allowed (e.g. books, online resources, scientific programming tools, etc.).
- It is not allowed to collaborate or communicate with others during the exam about the assignments.
- You can be picked out for a meeting to check that you understand the content of your examination attempt. The meeting will not affect your grade, but it can result in a formal investigation into possible cheating. I believe I have now returned comments on all drafts I received. If you sent a draft last week and haven't received anything from me get in touch. I will continue to accept drafts via email until Tuesday, March 29th at noon with feedback offered on a first come first serve basis.
Don't forget that even if you submitted a draft via email you MUST still submit officially via Canvas before the Thursday deadline!

The definition of \gamma_{g} in Problem 1.2 has been changed from \gamma_g(h) = g^{-1}hg to \gamma_g(h) = ghg^{-1}. This will take care of the problem with order of function composition.

There have been changes to the rules for mandatory assignments this year (see below). Unfortunately, there is no longer the opportunity for resubmission. In order to give you constructive feedback, I will offer the following:
- The mandatory assignment will be uploaded on the course website before Friday March 11th. Meaning you will have almost three weeks to complete it.
- If you submit a draft PDF (hand written and scanned or typed in latex) to me by email by noon on Thursday, March 24th, I will provide you with written feedback before Monday, March 28th.I cannot guarantee feedback for drafts sent after the Wednesday deadline. Your draft does not need to be complete.
- You will still have to submit your mandatory assignment on Canvas before the official deadline on Thursday, March 31st (14:15-14:30).

From Monday March 7th the exercise sessions will be physical from 14:15 in VB1!
On Wednesday Feb 23 and Thursday Feb 24 the lectures will be held over zoom and delivered by Chi Ho Yuen starting from the usual times (14:15 on Wed and 12:15 on Thurs). The zoom links are found in canvas.
Due to a fire in VB we will continue with digital lectures this week. The format will be the same as weeks 3 and 4 with uploaded screencasts followed by a zoom meet up for the second hour of the lectures on Wednesday and Thursday.
We will test out a hybrid format for the lectures next week. This means the lectures will take place live in VB and will also be broadcast over zoom (link to be found in canvas). Please attend in person if you are symptom free and comfortable doing so. PDF notes will be uploaded to the website following each lecture.
Due to their interactive nature, Monday's exercise sessions will continue over zoom until further notice.
The lectures on Wednesday January 19th and Thursday January 20th will be digital. The format for the online sessions consists of two parts:
1) Pre-recorded lectures: Approximately 45 minutes of prerecorded lectures (screencasts) will be uploaded to the course webpage prior to each online lecture (at least 24 hours in advance). These are to be watched preferably prior to the zoom sessions. Feel free to watch the videos at your leisure or use the first half of the lecture time for this purpose.
2) Zoom sessions: The zoom sessions will start during the second hour of the lectures (on the hour). I.e. Wednesday we meet at 15:00 on zoom and Thursday we meet at 13:00 on zoom. Links are sent via Canvas.
Also note that there will be time reserved during our first meeting on Wednesday for organisational planning and introductions.
There is no plenum/exercise session on Monday January 17th. The exercise sessions will begin after we have had the first week of lectures.
We will follow Fraleigh's A first course in abstract algebra, 7th edition.
The tentative curriculum consists of the following sections:
1-2 4-6, 8-11, 13-23, 26-27, 29-31, 33-34, 36-37, 48-51, 53-54, 55, 56.
The dashes above denote all sections in between, i.e. 4-6 means sections 4, 5, and 6.
