Good job on the exam everyone! Any feedback on the course is greatly appreciated and can be sent either to student representative or me directly. Hope you all will have a well-deserved and relaxing Christmas break!
Remember to print out and bring with you a clean copy (i.e. no handwritten notes) of the list of formulas to the exam. You will not be given one as part of the exam. Update: you are also allowed to bring an approved calculator to the exam, but you will not need it to solve any of the problems.
For practice purposes, here is last year's exam and a solution proposal for it.
Next week's Tuesday we are going to have one additional exercise class where we look at some problems from last year's exam.
The projector is finally working again in Seminarrom 123 so the lecture next week will be there instead of Aud 1.
Next week we will have a mini workshop as part of the Tuesday lecture (15.11) where we will have three exciting presentations by the PhD candidates. The topics for the presentations will be on parameter likelihoods in physical theories, Bayesian neural networks, and Restricted Boltzmann machines. Also, I will go through the last few slides from Chapter 10.
There will be no teaching next week, meaning that the next lecture will be on Tuesday, Nov 8th. But, keep working on the mandatory and remember the DL (Nov 3rd). If you get stuck, don't hesitate to ask for help/hints. Also, we do have an exercise class this Thursday (Oct 27th).
The mandatory assignment is now available. The report should be submitted through Canvas and the deadline for submission is November 3rd at 14:30. Note that there is only one attempt to pass the assignment, so don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about the problems. Happy solving!
There will be no lecture next week's Tuesday (11.10), but we will as usual have an exercise class on Thursday (13.10), where we start working on problems related to point estimation. Also, as a heads-up, the mandatory assignment will be handed out in the end of next week.
The default for the coming weeks will be lectures on Tuesdays in Aud 1 (VB) and exercise classes on Thursdays in Seminarrom 123. I will notify here if there are any changes to this.
We tested a new format for the exercise class last week where we went through the exercises one-by-one, meaning that for each problem you have some time to work on it by yourselves and then we go through the solution together. This seemed to work quite well last week so we are going to continue with this format also this week.
Frans Wentzel Gomez de Alvear has kindly agreed to be the student representative for the course (see below the message board for e-mail address). If you have any feedback or comments about the course (lectures, exercise classes etc), you may contact him, and he can then pass it on to me anonymously. You may of course also contact me directly. All constructive feedback is very welcome!
This week we are back to the standard format having the lecture on Tuesday (27.9) in Aud 5 (VB) (!) and the exercise class on Thursday (29.9) in Seminarroom 123 (VB).
Next week we will exceptionally change the order of the lecture and exercise class, meaning that we have the exercise class on Tuesday (20.9) in Seminarrom 123 and the lecture on Thursday (22.9) in Auditorium 1. The set of problems for next Tuesday (Exercise set 5) can be found in the exercise page.
We will continue using Aud 1 (VB) also this week for the lecture. Also, note that there will be no exercise class this week since I will be away Thu-Fri. Please, do still have a go at the problems in Exercise set 4 by yourselves. I will upload detailed solution proposals to the exercise page by the end of the week.
Due to the malfunctioning projector we will have today's lecture in Auditorium 1 (VB), that is, in the same room as last week.
From next week, the first hour of the exercise class (10:15-11:00) will be dedicated to problem solving, meaning that you will get an additional hour of working on the exercises on your own/together before I go through my solutions in the second hour (11:15-12:00). The first hour will also be a good opportunity to ask me questions related to the lectures/exercises. It is also okay that you only attend one of the hours if you prefer that.
The content of the course will be similar to previous years, following the book Statistical Inference by Casella and Berger (Second edition, 2002). The plan is to have two hours of lectures and two hours of exercise sessions per week, starting from Aug 23. Send me an email if you have any questions about the course.
