INTHE4033 – Advanced Module in Quantitative Methods
Course description
Course content
The course provides more in-depth knowledge and skills in the application?of quantitative methodologies in studies addressing health and health?services and enable the students to effectively develop a robust protocol?for their master’s degree thesis. Through lectures, seminars, and handson practical exercise, students shall be able to acquire and apply both?theoretical and practical skills on quantitative methods, designs, analyses?and presentations.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:?

Explain the measures of frequency, association and impact used in?epidemiology?

Outline the different quantitative study designs and their?applicability on studying health events?

Explain errors in epidemiological studies? Summarise the sensitivity and specificity of various measures in?quantitative studies?? Interpret power calculations for quantitative studies

Explain the use of Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs)
Skills?
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

Formulate appropriate quantitative research questions

Discuss and choose a relevant quantitative research design for your?master project

Estimate sample size and power in your own study both by hand, or?by using online calculators and statistical programs? Create DAGs to identify potential bias in your own projects when?planning your research

Assess the validity and reliability of quantitative data collection tools?

Choose statistical tests and epidemiologic measures appropriate for?addressing your research question

Interpret results from analysis of epidemiological data

Teaching
Teaching
The course consists of lectures, and seminars. In the seminars, the?students do exercises and assignments related to the course.
80% attendance in the seminars is required to be eligible to take?the exam. Attendance will be registered.?
The quota for absence is meant to cover normal sickness absence and the like. You are therefore not given a valid absence from classes based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to obstacles for which you yourself cannot be blamed.?In special cases, for example in the case of serious or long-term illness, you can apply for special needs provisions.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and?has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and?coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has?not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these?approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending?on available capacity.
Examination
One individual assignment and oral presentation.
80% attendance in the seminars is required to be eligible to take the exam.?

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in?English.
