How can you use Lovdata Pro during school exams?

An annotation is your own notes in a legal source: highlights, underlinings, and references to other legal sources.

As you read the syllabus and work with the legal sources during the semester, you will note important words, sentences, paragraphs, and sources that you want to see in connection with each other. To ensure good overview, both when studying and during the exam, students annotate their aids.

We recommend that you familiarize yourself thoroughly with Lovdata Pro and find a way of annotating that works for you.

To check what you will have access to during the exam, you can activate exam mode in Lovdata Pro at any time. Click on the gear icon in the bottom left corner, then click on “exam mode”. If you want to check which legal sources are permitted during the exam for the courses you are registered for, you can select “Exam regulations” via the gear icon, and then choose the course you want to check.

Here are the most important rules that apply to the use of Lovdata Pro in school examinations:

  • Annotations must be created in a specific format, and the titles of selections/documents must be within 40 characters (see below for a more detailed explanation).
  • Which legal sources are permitted in the exam may vary between courses. Check the information on the course/semester page and in Canvas. Examples may include
    • translated statutes and regulations.
    • International sources (EEA/EU, treaties, ICJ decisions, ECtHR judgments). Most ECtHR judgments are available as PDF documents and cannot be annotated, but they can be read during the exam.?

Other useful things to note about the use of Lovdata for exams

  • Check exam mode if you are unsure whether something can be used in a school exam.
  • Selections that are shared with others: make sure that all selections have been made your own before the exam. If not, they will not be visible in exam mode.
  • If parts of a note are not approved, the entire note will be unavailable during the exam.

About the annotations

  • Annotations must be made in the format that Lovdata Pro allows as a reference.
  • For example, you can write “cf. the Sale of Goods Act Section 2” or “cf. SGA Section 2”, but not “remember to check the Sale of Goods Act Section 2”.
  • If you get a green check mark in the annotation box, the annotation is approved. Alternatively, you can check whether you can see the annotation in exam mode.
  • You can learn more about how to create exam-approved annotations on Lovdata’s website.?

Selections and folders, and titles of folders/selections/documents

  • The reason for the 40-character limit on titles of selections/documents is both technical and pedagogical. You can make the titles longer than 40 characters, but only 40 characters will be visible during the exam.
  • Excessive use of folders, selections, annotations, references, and highlights may cause Lovdata to run slowly during the exam. If you experience slowness for this reason during the exam, this is your own responsibility.
  • Remember to make selections your own if you have shared selections, or someone has shared selections with you. Shared selections are not visible in exam mode. Check exam mode to see whether your selections are visible before you go to the exam.

Lovdata Pro during school exams at Silurveien

  • In on-campus exams, you log in to Lovdata Pro in the same way as usual.
  • During the exam, Lovdata Pro is automatically set to what is called exam mode.
  • You cannot make any changes in Lovdata Pro after you have logged in at Silurveien on the exam day.
  • Remember that you must refer to the legal sources you use in the exam answer. You may do this in a simplified manner; you do not need to use full references as you normally would in academic assignments.
