Learning outcomes

The master program in cognitive neuroscience equips you with both a broad and focused understanding of various research methods such as fMRI and EEG, first in the form of research methods courses, then through an internship within a research group or lab, and finally as you conduct a research study for your MA thesis. Together with the theoretical foundations you acquire from basic and elective courses, this makes you prepared for a career within cognitive neuroscientific research.

Knowledge outcomes

  • Understand the basics of cognitive neuroscience, including brain anatomy and physiology and theoretical frameworks for brain-behaviour relationships
  • Gauge the theoretical backgrounds of cognitive psychology and neuroscience and their relationship and relevance to other fields (e.g. biology, medicine) or subfields (e.g. clinical psychology).
  • Understand the theoretical foundations of empirical and statistical methods within cognitive neuroscience, including various MRI and EEG methods, as well as experimental and observational designs

Skills

  • Design, plan, and manage different types of research projects to test particular research questions.
  • Acquire psychophysiological recordings using state-of-the art neuroscience methods such as functional or structural magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, or eye tracking.
  • Analyze quantitative data according to a variety of statistical and computational methods, using an appropriate programming language (e.g. R, MatLab, Python or similar).

General competence

  • Communicate knowledge to other experts as well as the public.
  • Be critical to the knowledge and practice in the field of psychology and science.
  • Discuss strengths and limitations of cognitive neuroscientific evidence
  • Reflect on the ethical implications of research and experiments (with both humans and animals).
  • Present theoretical discussions and empirical findings from cognitive neuroscience both orally, in writing, and as a scientific poster
