Work environment surveys (ARK)

Here you, as an employee, will find information about the work environment survey (ARK), which is conducted every three years at the University of Oslo (UiO). The next survey will take place in February 2027.

Opportunity to influence your work environment

As an employee at the University of Oslo (UiO), everyone is expected to contribute to a safe and health?promoting work environment.

The work environment survey is used to “take the temperature” of the organisational and psychosocial work environment at both the unit level and across UiO as a whole.

The survey and the follow?up meetings give you, as an employee, an opportunity to share how you are experiencing your work situation and to influence your work environment.

You can help make your unit a better workplace for yourself and your colleagues, and contribute to building a valuable database for research on the work environment.

As an employee, you are expected to:

  • respond to the questionnaire sent to you by email
  • participate in your unit’s review of the results
  • reflect on what the results mean for you and your unit
  • propose measures for developing and safeguarding the work environment
  • participate in the implementation of work environment measures at your unit

About the survey

ARK is a comprehensive framework for conducting work environment and organisational climate surveys, developed by and for our sector.

The work environment survey maps key topics such as work climate, collaboration, leadership, and employees’ experiences of their work. In 2023, unacceptable behaviour (discrimination, bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, and violence and threats) was included in the questionnaire.

At UiO, we conduct work environment surveys:

  • because a good work environment is essential for wellbeing, good health, and our ability to perform our work
  • to gain insight into how employees experience their work situation
  • to provide a basis for strategic initiatives in work environment improvement and organisational development
  • because a good work environment is necessary to achieve UiO’s goals
  • to comply with the requirements of the Working Environment Act regarding a sound work environment, health?promoting workplaces, and systematic mapping and follow?up of the work environment

How to read the results

The reports present seven thematic or action areas. The results are displayed in bar charts showing mean values and standard deviations (black lines). The standard deviation indicates whether employees have responded fairly similarly (short line) or more divergently (long line).

The results are presented both as individual questions and as groups of questions. Individual questions are shown with turquoise bars, while groups of questions are shown with blue bars.

Some of the results are marked with an R. These are questions that were originally negatively worded but have been reversed in the presentation. This means that a high score represents a positive result.

When comparisons are made with previous years, aggregated data from UiO units that have previously conducted ARK are shown.
