Most of the PCs are now ready for use again

After problems occurred with many Windows PCs at UiO on March 4, most of the affected machines are now ready for use again. Here you will find answers to questions frequently asked to IT support in connection with the incident.

What happened?

Approximately 1200 Windows computers have been affected by the "black screen" issue, which means that the computer goes black after logging in or that the programs on the computer do not work. This is due to an error in a security update. The update was intended to lock old programs that pose a security risk, but by mistake, it locked more than just those.

What happens now?

Do you have the "black screen" problem and have not reported it?

Read the article that explains what you need to do, and report it as described.

Have you reported that you have the "black screen" problem and it is still not resolved?

Contact IT support.

Are you missing software on a computer that has been reset to fix the "black screen" problem?

The Office suite and standard programs are installed automatically on the computer. It may take some time, but they will be in place. Other programs you use can be installed from the Company portal. If the program is not available in the Company portal, you can install it from the original source. If you need administrator rights to install it on the computer, contact IT support.

Are you being asked to log in with a PIN?

Many users report being asked to log in with a PIN after the computer has been reset. If this happens to you, contact IT support to have this removed so that you can log in with your username and password as usual. Logging in with a PIN can cause issues, especially with using shared areas.

My computer is going to be reset, how long will it take? And when can I log in again?

It may take some time from when you report it until the resetting begins. The resetting can normally take up to 2 hours, but it may take longer in some cases depending on the internet connection.

You will see that the process is underway when the screen goes black or displays installation messages. When it is ready for use again, the login screen will appear again, and you can log in.

Once you have logged in, it is possible that not all the programs you use are in place. See information about programs above.
