FARM5120 – Clinical and hospital pharmacy
Course content
The course will provide students with in-depth knowledge of and experience from different aspects of hospital pharmacy, as well as knowledge of the different roles of pharmacists in the health care system. The course includes problem solving in connection with the production, advanced therapy, quality assurance (drug administration errors and patient injuries), clinical pharmacy methods, and optimization of drug treatment for the individual patient, health literacy and adherence.?The course will provide students with in-depth knowledge of how to solve complex challenges in advanced drug therapy, focusing on vulnerable patients, comorbidity, frailty or severely ill patients in all age groups.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you will have advanced knowledge of the importance of shared decision making, health literacy and adherence to drug treatment.
- you will have in-depth knowledge of how to solve complex challenges in advanced drug therapy, focusing on vulnerable patients such as comorbidity, frail or seriously ill patients in all age groups.
- you will have advanced knowledge of pharmaceutical compounding, drug administration and systems for safe medication practice.
- you can collaborate with other students and suggest initiatives for optimizing treatment for patients receiving complex drug therapy, including pharmaceutical ex tempore compounding.
- you can communicate about professional challenges and possible interventions with other health care professionals and patients.
- you will have broad knowledge of the use of relevant modern technology in hospital pharmacy (including electronic curves, pharmaceutical compounding and medicines management).
- you can analyze challenges within a chosen area of specialization (pharmaceutical compounding/ex tempore production, safe medication practice or clinical pharmacy), and autonomously suggest evidence based answers.
Admission to the course
The course is mainly open to students who have been admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy at the Department?of Pharmacy, University of Oslo. In the event that space is available, other master`s level students may apply. Knowledge in relevant subject area corresponding to the content of Semester 1 through 7 at the department’s Master`s Programme in Pharmacy is required. The course is open to a limited number of students, depending on available spesialization internships. On admission to the course, students are ranked by their average grade on semester 1-6 (until and including FARM3130 – Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE)).
The course has a common module as well as specialization in one of three parallel elective areas: production, safe medication practice and clinical pharmacy. Students, who already has clinical practice in FARM4100 – Personalised Drug Therapy, will not have priority for specialization in clinical pharmacy in FARM5120 – Clinical and hospital pharmacy (discontinued).?The module in clinical pharmacy is held in Norwegian and can therefore only be chosen if you are fluent in Norwegian.

For students admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy until and including 2016 and who have been transferred from the old study plan, separate formal prerequisite knowledge apply. These are in professional compliance with the formal prerequisite knowledge that apply to the course, but may be replaced by courses from the old study plan, as well as transitional courses. Students on transitional arrangements may contact the study administration for a complete overview of the formal prerequisite knowledge required.
Teaching
Lectures and student active teaching such as seminars, group work and peer reviews. Internships in the health care service, in one of three areas of specialization: pharmaceutical compounding, safe medication practice and clinical pharmacy.
Participation in internships and group work is compulsory.

Compulsory participation in the course must be completed and compulsory submissions must be approved to pass the exam.

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 3 years.
The course may be cancelled if the number of enrolled students are low.
